Australian Police: Charges Likely Over Photo Artwork

without comments

I’m all for a reasonable freedom of expression, but photographing children in suggestive poses leaves most sane people sickened.  What is most troubling is that the artistic community, in the form of Michael Reid, is more concerned about the artist’s right to free expression rather than the welfare of the children.  I’ll make the assumption that Mr. Reid means well, but the implications of his words would lead one to think that paedophiles and predators who call their perverse portraits “art” are above reproach.  At the very least, it smacks of selfishness on the artist’s part.

Bob passed away a few days ago, and I only got wind of it thanks to my friend Michael Sheppard, who linked it to his Myspace Blog.

Aesthetics-Online mailing list

Some of the most intriguing (and pretentious, William) posts on art, aesthetics, philosophy and other subjects can be found on the AE mailing list.  Apparently, it’s moving.  If this subject interests you, you might want to check out Aesthetics On-Line for more information.

Odysseus in front of Scylla and Charybdis

with 2 comments

One of the finest works of Swiss-Anglo painter (and perhaps a proto-surrealist) Henry Fuseli, this painting shows the choice Odysseus has to make between which monster he has to face (hence the phrase “Between Scylla and Charybdis,” or being caught in a difficult situation).

I want to kiss it - The Colossus of Nero

Perhaps the finest blog in the world on aesthetics comes from the wise fingers of Gawain, editor of Heaven Tree. In this installment, he comments on this gorgeous slab of royal foot.

Aisthesis - Revista Chilena de Investigaciones Estéticas

Aisthesis

Those of you familiar with aesthetics and theater life may wish to seek out this series of magazines from Chile. The cover of this one is from 1966, and is an excellent read, provided you can read Spanish. If there’s anyone coming to this site from Chile, I’d love to ask lots of questions regarding the publishers of this periodical.
